In the Canadiens’ season opener, Sam Montembeault delivered a stellar performance, solidifying his role as the team’s No. 1 goalie.

Montembeault made an impressive 48 saves in a 1-0 shutout against the Toronto Maple Leafs, setting a new NHL record for saves in a season-opening shutout.

This victory was crucial for Montreal, with Cole Caufield scoring the lone goal on a power play in the first period.

Despite heavy pressure from the Maple Leafs, including dangerous attempts from Auston Matthews, Montembeault remained calm and composed, preserving the win.

The Canadiens’ head coach, Martin St. Louis, praised Montembeault’s performance, emphasizing how important it is for the team to have confidence in their goalie moving forward.

Montembeault is now positioned to be the undisputed starter for Montreal this season after sharing duties last year. His strong start has also boosted his chances to represent Canada in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.
