Illan Meslier has stated that he stayed at Leeds United in order to help the club back to the Premier League.

Illan Meslier, goalkeeper for Leeds United, claims he felt sorry about the club’s relegation and that he did not want to leave the club this summer.

For the most of The Whites’ time in the English Premier League, the 23-year-old was their first-choice goalie. Last season, though, he was heavily chastised after some of his performances cost Leeds critical points in the relegation race.

Meslier attracted interest in the summer, with Real Madrid considering him as a replacement for the injured Thibaut Courtois. In preparation of Meslier’s departure, the club recruited Karl Darlow from Newcastle. The France U21 international, on the other hand, has started all five Championship games this season.

Speaking on Leeds United’s official podcast, the Frenchman stated that he will do everything in his power to assist the club this season:

“It was difficult to leave when the club was closing because I felt guilty on the inside.” I played the majority of the games, and the outcomes were dismal. It was not in my best interests to leave with a club in the second tier.”To go and play elsewhere and see Leeds in the middle of the second division and think, ‘oh no’. For me, I needed to stay and do my best to keep Leeds in the top two.”
