WEST HAM CONFIRM GIANLUCA SCAMACCA DEPARTURE, MAKE BIDS FOR MANCHESTER UNITED DUO HARRY MAGUIRE AND SCOTT MCTOMINAY
West Ham have not given up on their pursuit of former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire and have made an improved offer of £30 million for the defender after seeing their opening bid rejected. The latest offer comes on the same day as Gianluca Scamacca’s exit is confirmed, while the Hammers are also understood to be chasing Maguire’s Man Utd team-mate Scott McTominay in a double swoop.
West Ham United have confirmed the departure of striker Gianluca Scamacca on the same day they submitted two sepreate £30million bids for wantaway Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay.
The club announced Scamacca’s departure on Monday for an undisclosed fee.
The 24-year-old has returned to Italy to join Serie A side Atalanta BC on a permanent deal, just one year after signing a five-year contract at London Stadium.
During his year in east London, he totalled eight goals in 27 appearances, including five goals in the club’s run to lifting the UEFA Europa Conference League.
The Italian is the second player to leave West Ham for a significant fee this summer – understood to be around £21.5m – following Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal in a deal worth up to £105m.
One player West Ham want to bring in with the funds raised is former Manchester United captain Maguire, who is surplus to requirements under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
They had a loan offer rejected before an opening bid of £20m was also rebuffed, but have since returned with an improved offer worth £30m and are waiting to hear back from the Reds.
The Hammers are also understood to be chasing Maguire’s United team mate Scott McTominay.
Reports suggest the £30m offer for the Scotland international was rejected however, although the Hammers are expected to return with an improved offer.
But McTominay is not the only midfielder on the club’s radar. They’ve reportedly agreed a £32m deal with Ajax to sign 25-year-old Edson Alvarez, in what would be their first signing of the summer.
It is understood the Mexican has agreed a five-year contract and is expected to fly to London imminently for a medical.
David Moyes has struggled to agree on signings with West Ham’s new technical director Tim Steidten, with the manager’s future at London Stadium reportedly in doubt over the matter.
West Ham have been trying to sign top target James Ward-Prowse from relegated Southampton, but are having difficulty striking a deal with the South Coast club.
Without wanting to pay more than £30m for the England midfielder, West Ham have shifted their focus on other targets but could revisit the deal later in the window.
