Journalist reveals why Willy Gnonto really wants to join Everton from Leeds United

Leeds United winger has international aspirations in mind amid reports linking him with a move to Everton, according to the Daily Star.

As reported in the newspaper’s print edition (11 August, page 45), the Toffees are continuing to pursue the 19-year-old, who is keen to leave Elland Road and move to Goodison Park.

And Dave Maddock has revealed in his report the forward’s true reasons for wanting to make the transfer.

“The Toffees are also pursuing Leeds striker Wilfried Gnonto, who wants to leave Elland Road to improve his hopes of adding to his 11 Italy caps.”

Smart

Considering how young Gnonto is, it is incredibly impressive that he already has 11 caps for his nation, and with the European Championships fast approaching, he will be keen to put himself in the national team picture.

Italy are currently third in qualifying Group C for the tournament but have only played twice and are three points second-placed Ukraine, who have played a game more, which gives them a good chance of qualifying for the competition which takes place next summer.

By playing in the Championship, it will be much more difficult to get noticed and achieve his goal of featuring once again for Italy, and a move to the Premier League, therefore, makes plenty of sense.

Everton

Merseyside would be a great destination for the youngster to springboard his career, as he could help breathe life into a lacklustre Everton attack which struggled for goals last season.

This is certainly a deal to keep an eye on.

In other Everton news, the club can ease the burden on a striker already at Goodison by bringing in some reinforcements.
