“What I will say”: Joleon Lescott now shares what he’s noticed about Crystal Palace No.6 Marc Guehi
Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi has continued his fine form as he delivered a strong performance for England on Monday night.
Gareth Southgate’s side delivered a disappointing performance overall as they drew with North Macedonia in their final EURO 2024 qualifier, but Guehi delivered a fine performance at the back, having also impressed in last Friday’s draw with Malta.
The 24-year-old earned praise from Southgate after the game, and he has also wowed former Premier League centre-back Joeleon Lescott with his display.
Speaking after the game in Skopje, Lescott claimed that Guehi’s composure is remarkable for his age, and is one of his standout qualities.
“What I will say about Marc is that you will see the value and quality of Marc through the quality of striker he goes against,” he stated.
“He goes unnoticed against most teams but when he plays against top, top performers he will match that.”
“He plays with a level of patience and calmness you don’t associate with centre-halves that young. He came from a very good academy in Chelsea and is very composed in possession.
“What he loves to do is put himself in the right position and put his body on the lines but when the opportunity is there to step in between the lines he will do that.”
The centre-back has been outstanding during his time at Crystal Palace, having formed a strong partnership with Joachim Andersen.
Palace are keen to tie him down to a new contract, amidst transfer interest from Manchester United and Arsenal among others, and he is one of the most important figures at the club.
Roy Hodgson’s side have kept the joint-most clean sheets in the Premier League this season, and Guehi has been a big part of that.
His calmness at the back is the perfect foil for Andersen’s more aggressive style, and the pair, alongside goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, have been Palace’s two best performers this season.
