Junior Firpo can ‘cope’ in the Championship for Leeds United after Premier League nightmare – Sky Sports pundit

gWe’re delighted to welcome former Enlad ngoalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United …

The ex-England keeper believes the former Barcelona defender was regularly “targeted” by opponents in the top flight and failed to display “consistency and reliability”, but after returning from a long-term injury lay-off to make his first appearance under Daniel Farke against Plymouth Argyle should settle better at this level.

Sam Byram has made the starting left-back role his own but was subbed off with injury before the international break to hand Firpo his first action of the campaign, and Robinson now wants to see the 27-year-old maintain form for more than a game or two at a time.

The Sky Sports pundit exclusively told MOT Leeds News“I think the thing you’re looking at there is reliability. Consistency and reliability. For a one-off game, two games, since he’s been at Leeds he’s not been consistent.

“The Premier League I think was too much for him, he got found out and teams targeted him. Going forward, yeah, good. Good pace, good ability, decent delivery in the box, but defending-wise he was targeted by many teams that they played against and got caught lacking in certain areas.

I think he found the Premier League tough. The Championship will be a different offering for him. I think he’s able to cope at that level, but it’s doing it week-in and week-out, doing it at a consistent level which has been his issue.

“I know he’s been injured, he came back into the side and anyone who comes back in after such a long lay off they may not hit the ground running but where Leeds are they’re going to need players to do that.”

It would certainly help the Whites if Firpo could develop into a steady presence at what has been a problem position for the club.

Byram’s free transfer return has provided an answer at long last but if he is knocked out for any length of time there are arguably more question marks behind him at left-back than anywhere else in the squad.

So should Firpo take to this level in a way that he was never able to in the top division it would be a definite boost for Daniel Farke.

In other Leeds United news, a BBC journalist has been stunned by a “mental” development at Thorp Arch after what Adam Pope saw ahead of Rotherham.
