Miami QB Emory Williams set for Mon. surgery after suffering compound fracture of left arm, showed toughness on final play vs. FSU
True freshman QB Emory Williams showed a lot of grit for the Miami Hurricanes in his first road start that ended in a 27-20 loss at Florida State. And maybe the play that best epitomizes his toughness was an all-or-nothing fourth down scramble on the left side to convert and keep a final drive alive down seven points. But while stretching out for that first down, of course, Williams suffered an ugly left arm injury.
CaneSport confirmed today what everyone already pretty much knew: It’s season-ending. A source told CaneSport that it was a compound fracture of the left arm, and Williams’ surgery is scheduled for Monday.
It’s expected he will be able to participate in spring practice, although the surgery and rehab will of course need to go as planned.
Without Williams the only scholarship QBs on the team will be former starter Tyler Van Dyke and redshirting sophomore Jacurri Brown.
It appears this will once again be Van Dyke’s team notwithstanding coaches opting to give Brown a chance. Van Dyke’s lone series on Saturday ended with a desperation fourth-and-10 throw that was intercepted. Van Dyke had thrown 10 interceptions in his prior four games, which prompted his being replaced by Williams for the game vs. the Seminoles.
On Saturday Williams finished eight-of-23 passing for 175 yards with two TDs, and Van Dyke went two-for-seven with a final fourth-and-10 interception.
It was Williams’ fifth game played this season, meaning he won’t be eligible for a redshirt.
Now it’s on to face a 9-1 Louisville team at noon this Saturday at home, where Miami hopes to find some better offensive rhythm than UM has shown in its last six games when the team has gone 2-4 with both wins in overtime.
Miami cornerback Malik Curtis has entered the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned.
The junior cornerback just wrapped up his third season with the Hurricanes, failing to record any statistics during the 2023 season. He saw action in 19 games in his first two seasons with the program.
Prior to enrolling at Miami, Curtis was a three-star prospect and the No. 866 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class. He was ranked as the No. 46 athlete in the class and the No. 110 overall player from the state of Florida, hailing from Fort Myers (FL) Bishop Verot.
