Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is still not expected to return and will not return to NFL action next Sunday.

The quarterback is still recovering from a hand injury and has no chance of returning as under center for the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5 of the regular season against the Los Angeles Rams, according to a source from Michael Gehlken, of The Dallas Morning News, on Wednesday.

Cooper Rush is expected to be the signal caller for the Texas team for another week Will Grier, who was promoted to the franchise’s first squad also on Wednesday, will serve as his immediate backup. The information rules out the possibility that Dak Prescott could finally play after being injured in the Week 1 game.

Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has not closed the door on Prescott returning in Week 5, despite revealing that the quarterback still cannot hold the ball well enough to play.

“I know better,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan radio, according to Jon Machota of The Athletic, “I know he’s going to go out every day and make progress to be able to hold the ball. He’s going to have a big week, and he’s going to be hard on himself getting ready to go. Yesterday was an off day. My point is that we are just starting the week. Let’s see how the week goes.”

Dak Prescott, 29, has been sidelined since the Dallas Cowboys’ season opener. He underwent surgery to repair a fracture near his thumb. The QB said last week that he was “targeting a return in Week 5 against the Rams,” but his plans were changed. Since then, Cooper Rush has led the Cowboys’ offense in Prescott’s absence, winning all three of his games against the Bengals, Giants, and Commanders. The 28-year-old signal caller threw for four touchdowns and no interceptions, and led two campaigns to victory. Jerry Jones commented in September that he would see a competition between his quarterbacks if Rush played well enough. However, the GM has stated that he does not see a scenario where Cooper Rush starts as the starter with Prescott healthy and ready to take over the team’s offense again.
