Three takeaways: Concerns arise from the Cowboys’ narrow win at home over the Lions

Last week against the Dolphins, Dak Prescott orchestrated a 17-play touchdown drive in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. He led another go-ahead drive in nine plays this week. Prescott’s touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks gave the Cowboys the lead and ultimately the victory.

He completed 5-of-5 passes for 54 yards on the drive, including a 21-yard pass to Cooks on 3rd-and-5 to keep the drive going. Not to add Tony Pollard fumbled a running play, forcing Prescott to improvise for five yards on the ground. Another situation in which Dallas needed a score, and Prescott delivered. He completed 345 passes for 345 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

It’s the first time in franchise history that the Cowboys have failed to score at least 30 points at home, and the offense isn’t looking as good as it did a few weeks ago. When Dallas needs a touchdown, Prescott appears to forget about it all. He’s on a short list of good quarterbacks who improve when it counts the most right now.

Essentially the polar opposite of Prescott. This may seem strange since the Cowboys’ defense recently stopped the Lions on a two-point convert, but even that was debatable. Dallas would have suffered its first home loss if Taylor Decker had not allegedly failed to report as an eligible receiver.

But that is precisely the issue. This is a fantastic defense, easily one of the best in the league. But, in the last two weeks, when the Lions and Dolphins needed a touchdown to win, they got it.

With 1:41 remaining, Detroit had no timeouts and easily sliced through the Cowboys defense for a touchdown.

Dan Quinn is known for calling aggressive defensive plays, but on Saturday’s final drive, his defense let him down.

After Goff’s second interception, the Cowboys led by four points at the Detroit 29-yard line. The Lions had two timeouts and a two-minute warning. Dallas was in position for a touchdown on its second consecutive drive, or at the very least a field goal and a lot less time on the clock. McCarthy chose a ball down the sideline to Cooks on 2nd-and-14, which went out of bounds after he and Prescott were plainly not on the same page.

Even if it had been a no-gain running play, Detroit would have been forced to call its third.

But in that case, it seems fairly obvious to force them to utilize that final timeout. That kind of time management loses games, and it would have if not for the two-point conversion debate.

boys back to the Detroit 44-yard line, but Dallas still chose three consecutive pass plays over any clock-killing runs.
