This 2023-24 NFL season has taken a toll on some Las Vegas Raiders as they approach their final game of the season. Raiders running back Josh Jacobs has missed the last three contests with a quad injury, rookie tight end Michael Mayer has missed the last two with a toe injury, and a number of other Raiders continue to deal with injuries they have had for weeks. Now that Las Vegas is out of playoff contention, it’s more than reasonable for the team to consider sitting some of its star players against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, preventing any risk of further injury.
If it were completely up to Raiders Interim Head Coach Antonio Pierce, though, that would not exactly be his approach. “I’ll be honest, that might be something that I need to talk to with Mr. [Al] Davis and Champ Kelly about. But for me, if you’re healthy, you’re ready to go, we play. You play. “And that’s the way I was raised in this game, and that’s how I see the game. If you’re able to play. And you play at your fullest ability.
“And if we have guys that I feel are not doing it, then we’ll remove them from the game and from practice and go with somebody that wants to play. But I don’t see that being a problem. I haven’t seen a ‘want to’ being an issue here with us.”
The Raiders could very well be without Jacobs for their final game of the season. Fortunately for them, the 2022-23 rushing champ was not a huge contributor in Las Vegas’ 17-16 win over Denver in Week 1, having rushed for just 48 yards on 19 attempts while adding 23 yards on two receptions. Second-year Raiders running back Zamir White has also stepped up in Jacobs’ absence, especially in their victory against the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day when he ran for 145 yards. The Silver and Black finish the 2023 NFL Regular season next weekend at home by hosting their AFC West rival, the Denver Broncos.
