Aston Villa ‘weighing up’ move for £32.8m Premier League outcast

The latest Premier League transfer news as Aston Villa weigh up signing a £32.8m West Ham flop.

Aston Villa are reportedly considering a shock move for former West Ham United winger Felipe Anderson, with an opportunity available to sign the Brazilian for free. The 30-year-old, who’s at Lazio following failed spells with the Hammers and Porto, sees his current contract expire in June of this year.

It has become clear over recent weeks that Unai Emery wants to add to his forward options at Villa Park, with speculation mounting and numerous names linked. Right-back, goalkeeper and central midfield are three other positions of priority but a versatile forward is desired as Villa push for success in multiple competitions.

Sky Sports claims Villa are showing a serious interest in signing Anderson, with the window now open to discuss a deal. Juventus are also said to be keen on the former Brazil international, who has 54 goals and 62 assists to his name in exactly 300 Lazio appearances.

Although the attacker’s figures are impressive in Serie A, it’s tricky to see why Villa would prioritise him over other options. For starters, Emery would have to wait until the summer to make use of Anderson, while his numbers at West Ham weren’t exactly convincing.

His first Premier League season was decent as he scored nine goals and assisted a further four, but just one goal in 25 league games during his next – and final – campaign brought about plenty of concern. Anderson then struggled on loan at Porto, making just 10 appearances, before heading back to Lazio.

Of course, the fact Anderson, who West Ham once spent £32.8 million on, wouldn’t cost a penny to lure from Italy makes him a little more enticing, but the wage demands would probably bring about a different story. Nonetheless, the rumour stands and it’s from a credible source, too.
