Saints make decision on Alvin Kamara’s status ahead of must-win game against Falcons

Alvin Kamara was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons with an ankle injury, despite missing all three days of practice for the New Orleans Saints this week.

Kamara suffered an ankle injury near the end of the first half in last week’s 23-13 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The running back tried to test the ankle after halftime, only to return to the locker room once it became clear he couldn’t go.

“Alvin, he’s one of those guys that is so valuable to our team that we’re going to go all the way up to game-time to see where he’s at,” Saints coach Dennis Allen said. “He’s made improvement throughout the week, and we’ll just wait until game time to make a decision on that.”

If Kamara can’t go, the Saints will rely on a Jamaal Williams and a slew of backups. Rookie Kendre Miller, who has missed the last seven games with an ankle injury, is on track to return, although he missed practice Friday with an illness and was listed as questionable. The team could also seek to elevate either James Robinson or Jordan Mims off the practice squad to have an additional player at the position.

Kamara was one of seven players listed as questionable, joining Miller, tight end Juwan Johnson (chest), Khalen Saunders (concussion), wide receiver A.T. Perry (illness), safety J.T. Gray (illness) and defensive end Payton Turner (toe).

Allen said Turner will be activated off injured reserve in time for Sunday’s game, telling reporters he anticipated the defensive end will be available to play. The game will mark Turner’s first appearance since Week 1, when he suffered a turf toe injury against the Tennessee Titans.

“I’ve been chomping at the bit since September to get back,” Turner said.

The Saints ruled out two players: safety Lonnie Johnson (knee) and tackle Landon Young (knee).

Young’s knee injury is another blow to New Orleans along the offensive line. Last week, the Saints shut down Ryan Ramczyk (knee) for the season by placing the injured veteran on injured reserve. Young had replaced Ramczyk since Dec. 17, when Young started at right tackle against the New York Giants. Young, however, hurt his MCL against the Buccaneers and was replaced by veteran Cameron Erving.
