Aston Villa in touch with Sporting star Pedro Goncalves
Aston Villa “remain in talks” to sign Sporting midfielder Pedro Goncalves, according to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo.
Due to his unbelievable consistency, Villa have rekindled their interest in the midfielder. West Ham are also keen to sign him.
The 25-year-old has been enjoying a fantastic campaign, and he has surprised everyone by playing in the deep playmaker role in recent games.
O Jogo (28 January, page 14) says that Villa hold a long-term interest in the player, and recently they have reignited their interest in him. They have made contact with the player’s agent asking him about his contractual situation, and they “remain in talks” over a potential move.
However, Villa are aware that it won’t be simple to lure him away after the end of the season because Goncalves has a contract at Sporting until 2027 and he has a release clause of around £68m.
Next summer
There is no way Villa can sign him in January. Sporting have made it clear that they won’t sell any of their star players in the middle of the season.
The Lions have 90% of the economic rights of the player who is apparently happy in Portugal. He has made over 150 appearances for the club and has been one of their best players.
Goncalves has managed 10 goals and eight assists this season, and the numbers look all the more impressive as he has mostly played in the deep midfield role.
Villa have other targets this month. They are looking to sign Middlesbrough winger Morgan Rogers and have sent their third bid for him. The club is hopeful that they can secure his signature this month.
Goncalves is a terrific midfielder who can play in multiple positions. If Villa manage to secure a place in the top four, and Champions League football as a result, they will be in a better position to lure him away next summer.
