Crystal Palace have approached Roy Hodgson about a surprise return to Selhurst Park till the end of the season, following Patrick Vieira’s dismissal.
The 75-year-old former England manager is reportedly interested in succeeding Vieira. The Frenchman was informed of his dismissal by the chairman, Steve Parish, in a 7 a.m. call when he arrived at the club’s training field on Friday.
Parish sees Hodgson, who was replaced by Vieira in July 2021 after the former England manager left at the end of the previous season, as a reliable alternative to keep Palace out of relegation peril. Vieira’s firing came following a 12-game winless streak in 2023.
Hodgson is likely to speak with Parish following Palace’s travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Arsenal on Sunday, but is expected to be given the role until the conclusion of the season, when other candidates to take the position on a permanent basis will be available.
Paulo Fonseca, who presently manages Lille in France and was close to taking over as Tottenham manager in 2021, is said to be one of those who could be considered.
When Hodgson left Palace 18 months ago, it appeared that he was about to retire, but he returned to management at Watford last year. After failing to keep the Hornets up, Hodgson stated, “I don’t think I’ll be putting my name forward for further stories in the world of Premier League football.”
More immediately, former club captain Paddy McCarthy will lead the team against Arsenal on Sunday, with under-21s coach Darren Powell and goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely on hand.
