Former Patriots receiver expected to join team as assistant coach (report)

Jerod Mayo has added another familiar face to his coaching staff.
According to various sources, the Patriots are returning Tiquan Underwood as an assistant receivers coach.
Underwood was only with the team for the 2011 season. Along with his high-top fade, Underwood is noted for his tenure in New England after being released the night before Super Bowl XLVI

Underwood, who has made occasional appearances at Patriots training camp, has spent the previous four seasons coaching receivers in college, first at Rutgers (2020-21) and then at Pitt (2022-23).
The former Patriots receiver, who was Mayo’s teammate, taught Pitt’s receivers while also serving as Frank Cignetti Jr.’s offensive pass game coordinator.
While Pitt’s offensive staff was sacked during the offseason, Underwood was the only coach that remained.
Under his tutelage, the Panthers did have a receiver, Jared Wayne, who had over 1,000 yards receiving with 60 catches.
Underwood appears to be replacing Ross Douglas, who left to teach Syracuse’s receivers.

Troy Brown has served as the lead receivers coach since 2021. Brown most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Senior Bowl. It appears that Underwood will collaborate with Brown, though it is unknown wLast week, Mayo hired former Patriots Super Bowl winner Dont’a Hightower as a linebackers coach.
On the offensive side, Underwood will join Alex Van Pelt (offensive coordinator), Ben McAdoo (senior offensive assistant), Scott Peters (offensive line), Robert Kugler (assistant offensive line), and T.C. McCartney (quarterbacks coach) as new staff members.hether Brown will remain on Mayo’s staff.
