Aston Villa in ‘chase’ to sign highly-rated Championship winger in the summer, buy-back clause could kick in
Aston Villa sold Jaden Philogene to Hull City in the summer of 2023, but the Villans are now apparently keen to get him back to Villa Park, and his contract includes a buy-back provision.
Unfortunately, it is not as simple. The clause will only become active if Hull are promoted to the Premier League; if another club files a bid that surpasses the buy-back clause, Villa will be required to match it.
Regarding Philogene’s contract clause, Hull vice-chairman Tan Kesler stated: “He’s not their player; he’s a Hull City player for sure, that I can tell you.” I’ve been open from the start, and you should be aware that if we [are] promoted, Villa have agreed to a buyback, but only if we [are] promoted and in the Premier League. They must still reach an agreement with the player and, more importantly, match any further offers [from a rival club].
“I believe that when the time comes, Villa will have to pay a high price to get him back, but they are our friends, so I’m not saying anything inappropriate here. If we [are] promoted at any point during Jaden’s contract, they have the option to buy him back for a particular sum, again – I emphasize – if no other offers are made. So there will be offers.
If Villa are serious about re-signing Philogene, they will have to compete with Tottenham Hotspur, according to TEAMtalk. Furthermore, Tottenham are thought to be ‘leading’ the group.
It is currently unclear where Philogene’s preferred destination is. Villa can compete financially with the Lilywhites; therefore, the ball is in the 22-year-old’s court.
