The Twins traded Jorge Polanco for payroll clearance and positive market value, but Edouard Julien’s emergence in 2023 pushed Polanco out. Julien’s passive at-bats and lack of success led to starving lineup producers.

Julien has transitioned from a patient approach to a power approach, despite the Twins’ desire to hit home runs. This shift is part of a two- offensive extremes strategy.

Julien’s ISO has increased 15 points from 2023, with a higher launch angle, slightly increased barrel rate, and increased hard-hit rate. However, other factors present a downside.

Julien’s walk rate and strikeout rate have decreased from 15.7% to 11.8% this season, affecting his overall performance. Although he is striking the ball harder, the increase in fly ball rate is not a positive development. He has not fully developed as a power hitter, and his batted balls are not often majestic. Adding 18% to his fly ball rate would be beneficial.

Julien’s 25-home run power in 2023 significantly impacted his performance, resulting in consistent on-base and extra base appearances. However, his focus on barrels has led to expected results that are worse than actual outcomes.

Byron Buxton’s 28 home runs in 2022 marked the end of his transformation into a power hitter. However, Julien should emulate his middle-of-the-order profile. Minnesota replaced Luis Arráez at second base with a player who could be an effective but different hitter. Second-year adjustments are necessary to react to opposition changes.
