Hopefully, you’ve been reading my writings for a while and are aware that my children are 15, 12, and 10 years old. I want my teenagers to adore this city as much as I do, so I purposefully plan interesting, safe, and engaging activities for them to do. Now, I understand that school is still in session and summer is a full month away, but smart planning prevents poor performance! The streets are calling our names! Here are some of our favorite summertime activities that we can’t wait to do.

Redbirds Game

I’ve met several Memphis residents who have never been to a Redbirds game. I usually question, “What are you waiting for?” They frequently shrug and say, “I’m not a baseball person.” Then I have to explain that Redbirds games are far more than that. My daughter’s school choir recently sung the national song before the game. I watched the players warm up and had a proud mommy moment. Then I had the greatest time ever! There’s certainly something captivating about relaxing at a Redbirds game. Perhaps it’s the blazing sun, an ice-cold drink, and a hot dog. Perhaps it’s the intermittent games and opportunities for crowd engagement. Whatever the case, I’ll be there!

My favorite games are played on Thursday nights. My husband claims it’s because I can get $2 beers, but I swear it’s due of the retro jerseys. On Sundays, children aged 12 and younger can receive a free ice cream sandwich. There are other times where they have post-game fireworks and let the kids run the bases. Definitely see their promos page. Pro-tips: 1. Bring a hat. 2. Bring a credit card; the stadium is cashless. 3. Have a purse or bag? Make sure it is obvious.

Overton Park Shell

As soon as our school state assessments were completed, I packed our picnic blankets, lawn chairs, mosquito spray, and incense into the trunk. I also tossed in a couple empty water bottles and our picnic basket, which has plates, napkins, and cutlery. Those items will remain in my trunk throughout the summer and fall. I do all of work in anticipation for one event: the Overton Park Shell Orion Free Concert Series! Beginning this month, shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. On weekdays, this allows us to pick up the kids from their after-school activities, go to the shop for some snackerdoodles, and find the right chairs on the grass. As the sun sank,

My kids have been to a variety of music genres that aren’t normally available to them through mainstream radio. Through this music, they learn acceptance and appreciation. This summer they plan to chill to the symphony, dance to Bodywerk, and regrow some roots to Talibah Safiya, just to name a few. Although if I’m honest, we’ll probably attend about 14 shows.
