Newcastle are close to making an early signing, and a £35 million deal is being considered as the club prepares to splurge – The Times.

According to Martin Hardy at The Times, Newcastle will ‘spend significantly’ this summer and have already identified two early targets.

The North-East reporter claims we are hoping to finalise the signing of Lloyd Kelly ‘this week’ now his departure from Bournemouth has been confirmed, with Eddie Howe eager to be reunited with the versatile defender he bought for the Cherries.

Elsewhere, it’s believed we are stepping up our search for a young goalkeeper able to compete with Nick Pope and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili has been identified a ‘leading target.’

The Times say Howe is a ‘big fan’ of the 23-year-old Georgian, who is available for a fee in the region of £35m following an impressive season in La Liga where he’s been watched several times by Toon scouts, as we revealed in a NUFCBlog exclusive earlier this year.

As for outgoings, Hardy adds that Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron could be sold in order to raise funds, with Martin Dubravka’s future also in doubt. Loris Karius will leave once his contract expires next month and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale has been discussed, but it’s believed Mamardashvili is our preferred target at present.
