Striker says he was close to joining Tottenham, but the move was terminated due to a work permit

However, there have been several notable players who could have represented Spurs but for various reasons, the moves did not materialise.

Among these near-misses, Brazilian footballer Hulk tops the list.

Known for his imposing physique and thunderous shots, the athletic centre-forward could have left an indelible mark on the Lilywhites.

Standing out not only for his physicality but also for his exceptional talent, Hulk made a name for himself on the pitch despite not playing in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

However, the current Atletico Mineiro striker had a chance to play in the Premier League for none other than Tottenham back in 2021.

According to the Brazilian outlet Trivela, Spurs had the opportunity to sign Hulk during Jose Mourinho’s tenure in North London.

In a recent interview with GaloCast as quoted by the Trivela, the former Brazil international revealed that Mourinho had expressed interest in bringing him to Spurs.

“Mourinho even got in touch with my agent about taking me to Tottenham, but then they realised I couldn’t play in England.”

The Portuguese manager reached out to Hulk’s agent, but the move fell through because Hulk couldn’t secure a work permit to play in England.

After spending four and a half years in China, Hulk encountered restrictions that prevented him from immediately playing in the English top flight.

The 37-year-old explained that the rules stipulated players must either have represented the Brazilian national team or played in one of five specified leagues to be eligible.

There is no doubt Hulk would have been a formidable addition to Tottenham’s forward line under Mourinho, pairing his powerful presence with the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.
