Newcastle United aren’t messing about this summer with two free transfers practically complete, Eddie Howe has turned his attention to his first purchase of the summer.
It’s an international tournament year which means any players representing their respective country in the tournament are essentially putting themselves in the shop window for club managers to take a look at.
It makes buying those players trickier because of the logistics of dealing with a player who is away, involved in games, but also, clubs like to hang on to see how their stars perform in the tournament before making decisions on their future. Why let a player go for £10million now, when they could score a couple of worldies in the Euros and you could double their asking price?
Which is why it’s now being reported by Gols Media in Spain that Newcastle are keen to get a deal for goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili wrapped up before the tournament starts.
Newcastle want the deal tied up before Euro 2024 gets underway
Valencia’s Mamardashvili will be representing Georgia at this summer’s Euros and if Newcastle don’t get the deal sealed before then, the aforementioned price hike could become a thing if he performs well.
Talks are progressing over a €40million (£34million) switch and there’s hope that it can all be tied up before 14th June when Euro 2024 gets underway.
if all goes according to plan that would see Giorgi Mamardashvili become Newcastle’s third signing of the summer following the free-transfer arrivals of Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabiyo after reports this week suggested things were very close to completion on those two.
This could be the ideal start to summer business
Getting three top players in for under £40million to shore up the defence is, honestly, a masterstroke by the club should it all work out.
Not only does it fill in the gaps that desperately needed filling, but it doesn’t dent the budget too much which means we should have plenty left over for the attacking options – another striker or two and a right-winger.
Newcastle need players for other positions too, but those five or six incomings would stand us in good stead for next season.
