What is Johnny Depp’s recent health crisis?
Sometime around his appearance in the Rum Diaries, his behavior changed dramatically. He left his partner of 14 years, the mother of his children (which likely hurt him a lot), married an opportunistic young actress too quickly, started making really bad financial decisions, and began getting “falldown drunk” in public (there are videos of this freely available on the internet). These things are all consistent with life effects in the wake of an addiction. Depp notoriously struggled with drugs and alcohol in the late 1980′s, but got cleaned up.
I am someone who has followed his career since Edward Scissorhands, and I have a complicated view of the accusations that happened against him with his ex-wife, Amber Heard. These days, if you do anything but automatically believe the woman, you are criticized for being part of the problem. I recognize this, and I do believe her, but also, I feel like not every situation is cut and dry or demonstrable of larger pattern behavior. Do I believe he did it? Yes, but not in a way that was pre-meditated. Is there an excuse for that? No. Do I believe there is an explanation? Yes. Do I believe he should be automatically demonized as an abuser for the rest of his life, and stripped of his ability to work in the movies? No, but it depends on how he acts going forward. The incident occurred within a couple days of his mother passing away. His mother was one of his closest people, evidenced by a tattoo on his arm of her name that he’s had for many years. He was likely drunk and extremely distraught, within 72 hours of his mother’s death. Nobody knows what transpired between this couple throughout their relationship, and I can only speak from 30 years of watching interviews, reading articles, and hearing accounts from people who have met the man (which I also briefly have, and thought he was great)…nothing I’ve read since the late 1980’s suggests that he is anything but a generous, kind, intelligent, playful person…but addiction messes people up, and I really hope he gets help before it’s too late.
