Fabrizio Romano says he can ‘guarantee’ one thing about Tottenham’s Cristian Romero after Real Madrid links

Spurs are expected to sell quite a few players in this window. The likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga have already been released, while Emerson Royal is expected to be moved on very soon.

There will be a lot of movement at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the next two months, but what nobody is expecting is to see Romero move.

The Argentine is one of Tottenham’s most important players. He had a brilliant 2023/24 season and is a fan favourite at the club.

However, Real Madrid are said to be interested in signing Romero this summer.

Romero has been at Tottenham since the summer of 2021.

The Argentine instantly became a fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and he has improved a lot over the last three years.

Romero reached a whole new level under Ange Postecoglou in the 2023/24 season. He is no longer the reckless defender who is always at risk of getting sent off – he has matured a lot in that department.

That has impressed many people and it could be why Spanish giants Real Madrid have made contact to sign Romero this summer.

Fabrizio Romano has now had his say on the transfer links.

The journalist has revealed that many clubs are interested in signing Romero, but Tottenham have absolutely zero interest in selling him.

Romano has even claimed that Spurs will not entertain any talks to sell their vice-captain this summer.

He said on Playback: “Cuti Romero to Real Madrid – guys, many clubs appreciate Cuti Romero, but Cuti Romero is Tottenham. Tottenham have no intention at all to let Cuti Romero leave.

“Cuti Romero is a key player for Tottenham. If we want to talk about interest in Cuti Romero, we could spend three days. But I can guarantee to you that Cuti Romero is absolutely a crucial player for Tottenham and Tottenham have no intention to entertain any discussion.”

What Tottenham need to do with Romero’s contract

Romero initially joined Tottenham on loan from Atalanta but that move was made permanent in the summer of 2022.

The World Cup winner signed a five-year deal then, which ties him down until the end of June 2027.

Tottenham are in a strong position in potential transfer negotiations as a result, but it’s time for Daniel Levy to start thinking about the future.

Spurs should offer a new deal to Romero in the coming months to extend his contract beyond 2027. The last thing they would want is to see him enter the 2025 summer transfer window with just two years left on his deal.

Tottenham are at no risk of losing Romero in this window, but Real Madrid’s interest should act as a warning sign for Levy. He should start working on a new deal for the Argentine ASAP!
