Pundit shares David Moyes priority at West Ham United after what happened last season
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…”
Frank McAvennie believes West Ham United manager David Moyes will prioritise a Europa League run this season.
The verdict comes after the East London club lifted the Europa Conference League trophy last season, resulting in the step up in competition this time around.
McAvennie has, however, suggested that a run in the EFL Cup could also be a good plan given how winning the Premier League is a long way off for the Hammers.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Moyes would have seen what happened last season with the Conference League, so he will want to have a run in the Europa League.
“He isn’t going to win the Premier League, but he could win the League Cup, it’s only five or six games that you need to win.
“Of course he will want to climb the league and finish in the top half of the table, but you can see what the Conference League win did for East London.
“They could have won the Europa League the year before, but then again they wouldn’t have won the Conference League if that happened, so these things are meant to be.”
Last time out, along with their Europa Conference League glory, the East London club finished 14th in the Premier League. And in the EFL Cup and FA Cup, the Hammers were knocked out in the third and fifth rounds respectively.
This time around, Moyes’s side are impressing in the league, having already got their Europa League campaign underway, with an EFL Cup third round tie against Lincoln City coming up on Wednesday (27 September).
