West Ham United: Pundit shares what he’s heard about James Ward-Prowse transfer

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is happy that West Ham United are closing in on a move for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The Hammers are currently finalising the paperwork for the player’s contract, with a formal announcement regarding his signature expected on Monday (14 August), as per Sky Sports (13 August).

The pundit is expecting his former club to improve from set pieces upon the arrival of the England international, who has scored several free-kicks and penalties for the Saints over the years.

He would become the club’s second signing of the summer transfer window after the arrival of fellow midfielder Edson Alvarez from Ajax.

McAvennie also expressed his excitement at the impending deal to bring Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to the London Stadium.

According to Sky Sports (13 August), the centre-back is still finalising his exit from Old Trafford, but everything remains in place for the £30million transfer to go through.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Apparently the Ward-Prowse one is done, I’ve heard it’s over the line, everything is agreed.

“David Moyes can get a few goals from free-kicks now with Ward-Prowse, which is a big part of football now.

“The guy has a wonderful right foot, so yeah I’m happy with that. They need players, so I’m happy that Moyes has got him.

“Maguire would be a good signing too, I don’t think he’s a Manchester United player, there is too much pressure on him. Moving to West Ham would be good for him too.”
