Bill Belichick has warned coaches about New York Giants organization, takes direct aim at leadership

The New York Giants played an important influence in Bill Belichick’s early career. While the storied franchise is a vital part of the future Hall of Famer’s legacy, Belichick’s attitude toward it looks to have shifted drastically in recent years.

Belichick, who is 72 in April, has been mentioned as a Giants coaching contender in 2025 if Brian Daboll retires. It felt like a perfect fit, giving the eight-time Super Bowl champion the chance to coach the team where he had previously worked as an assistant and defensive coordinator for a decade.

However, New York might not be a possibility at all. Even if the Giants disappoint in 2024 and Daboll is fired, Belichick’s perception of the Giants’ organization has shifted tremendously. Even more concerning for New York, it appears that he is warning everyone who would listen to be cautious about the current leadership.

Raanan pointed out that Belichick had a solid relationship with Wellington Mara, but the same connection and trust does not exist with John Mara and Steve Tisch. While New York’s defensive coordinator from 1985 to 1990 allegedly still has pleasant recollections of his time as a Giants coach, he isn’t as optimistic about the franchise’s current position and the people in charge.

Not only that, but Belichick has reportedly informed confidants and future coaches that he does not trust the Giants’ organization. As Raanan explained, New York’s public image contradicts what Belichick told NFL officials about the present leadership.

“Over the years, Bill Belichick has offered counsel to people… that he didn’t like the Giants’ organizational structure. Like, he didn’t believe the Giants were such a terrific organization. Bill Belichick, like everyone else who is observing from the outside (and) seeing how it is set up, does not believe — at least from what I’ve heard — that it is this wonderful organization in its current form. He has directly advised individuals to be cautious about the organization, its setup, and how it is operated. That has happened.

Barring unanticipated changes in the Giants’ leadership, it looks unlikely that Belichick would contemplate returning to the team. Even more concerning for New York, if it is looking for a new head coach in 2025, are Belichick’s warnings to his peers.
