The Georgia football family is mourning the loss of former Bulldogs linebacker Akeem Hebron, who died unexpectedly over the weekend, according to many friends and the football department.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a beloved member of the Bulldog family, Akeem Hebron,” Georgia football announced in a statement.”His passion to Georgia Football will never be forgotten. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Hebron was a member of Georgia’s 2006 football recruiting class and went on to play in 16 games for the Bulldogs from 2008 to 2010, recording 10 stops and seven assists, including two for a loss in his senior year, when he also recorded his only sack in college.
Georgia went 24-15 throughout Hebron’s tenure and won two bowl games, rising to No. 1 in the top 25 rankings to begin the 2008 season before concluding at No. 13 in the AP poll after a 10-3 record and a Citrus Bowl victory.
Hebron was momentarily suspended during his Georgia career, but he recovered and finally graduated with a degree, a personal turnaround that piqued the interest of former Bulldogs head coach Mark Richt.
“A good thing happened to Georgia and to him,” he remarked.”The most important thing, I believe, that has happened to him is that he has matured into a man. That is one of the most important aspects of college life. He’s a nice man, and he’s shown it. I’m quite proud of him.
