The New York Giants are definitely going to botch the No. 6 pick
The New York Giants have a few months to figure out how they’re going to screw up their first-round choice. By all accounts, this is a deep quarterback draft, with a few players flirting with franchise status. There are three to four teams with quarterback needs ahead of the G-Men, thus Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll, ranked sixth, are potential candidates to be left out.
Unless people want their destiny dictated to them, they must make a decision or have a strategy in place in case the possibilities are Michael Penix way too early or potentially too late. However, this is an excellent opportunity for the coach-GM combination to capitalize on the pandemonium that will undoubtedly surround the first five picks.
Unless Schoen has the assets or stones to go after the No. 1 pick in Caleb Williams, which I doubt he has, New York will be obliged to take whoever is available or trade for someone on the block. It’s nearly — almost — advantageous to be ranked sixth and allow other teams to show their cards first.
If that means taking a chance on Justin Fields for half the price of trading up to get Jayden Daniels, then so be it. In the grand scheme of unmovable contracts, Daniel Jones pales in comparison to Russell Wilson. And, with him likely out for the majority of next season recovering an ACL injury, there will be no doubt as to which team this is.
Whatever ACC witchcraft goes on with these pro-style quarterbacks is enough to mesmerize the Giants’ front office into signing Drake Maye. New York is one of the worst franchises for discounting college production, thus Maye would be an ideal Giant, especially if he falls to the same choice as Jones.
