New York Giants make definitive quarterback decision ahead of next season
General manager Joe Schoen has reminded New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones that the franchise trusts in him, amid speculation about a new quarterback ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Giants have the sixth pick in the draft, which takes place between April 25 and 27 in Detroit, Michigan. The 2024 Draft class is loaded with great quarterbacks, including Caleb Williams (USC), Drake Maye (North Carolina), and Jayden Daniels (LSU), who are predicted to be the first three picks.
Jones signed a four-year contract for $160 million (£126 million) with the Giants in the 2023 offseason, after they elected to utilize their franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley and prioritize re-signing the quarterback. However, the Giants struggled last season, winning only six of seventeen games, and Jones only appeared in six of them, losing five.
Jones had a tough season due to injuries, including neck difficulties and a ruptured ACL, and only threw two touchdown passes and six interceptions. But on Tuesday, Schoen made it obvious who his primary pick is, saying, “I have faith in Daniel Jones as our starting quarterback.”
There were rumors that the Giants would select a future quarterback because of their high selection pick, but Schoen reaffirmed that this is not in their immediate intentions, despite Jones’ recent return to the field. Speaking live from the NFL combine on Tuesday, Schoen allayed Jones’ fears with a clear statement of intent ahead of the draft.
“He’s actually throwing, he’s been throwing for about two weeks stationary,” she said. “He’s not sliding back or anything like that. He’s on pace, doing everything he can to get back, and we’re optimistic about where he is… there haven’t been any setbacks yet.
“If he continues at that pace he should be ready at the start of training camp.” That’s not to say the Giants won’t draft quarterbacks, especially given their lack of depth in 2023.
Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito took over for Jones last year, with the latter making headlines since he still lives at home with his parents. However, Schoen is also aware that other areas of the roster require reinforcement, making a key few nights in Detroit.
“The reality is he’s (Jones) coming off three injuries in two years,” he remarked. “Those are facts. It’s something we have to consider. We’ll address it through free agency, and if a chance arises in the draft, we’ll look at every position, not just quarterback, because we have needs throughout the squad.”
