Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers took place on Friday, with Pro Bowl OL Penei Sewell throwing the first pitch before the game.

Detroit pitcher Tarik Skubal started strong, throwing four scoreless innings. JP Sears threw a no-hitter, but Matt Vierling hit a solo shot to make it 1-0. Spencer Torkelson drove in Andy Ibanez and Riley Greene added on, making it 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth.

Oakland won the game 3-0 until Brent Rooker hit a home run in the 6th inning, extending Detroit’s lead to 3-2. Mark Canha hit a solo shot in the 6th, and Gio Urshela doubled to knock out Sears. In the 7th, Abraham Toro scored a solo shot, but J.J. Bleday walked and Skubal was taken out.

In the 7th inning, the Tigers tied the game with two runners on out. Oakland tied the game in the 8th inning with Lucas Erceg and Spencer Torkelson, giving Detroit a 5-4 lead heading into the 9th inning.

The Tigers secured a 5-4 victory on Opening Day, thanks to a one-run lead by Andrew Chafin and a one-out save by Alex Lange. The Tigers will face Detroit in game two of the series tomorrow.
