Newcastle United’s tight grip on the battle for European qualifying slipped slightly as they drew 1-1 with Brighton & Hove Albion at St James’ Park.

The Magpies fell behind early on as Joel Veltman converted from close range after Brighton’s flicked-on corner. However, the hosts drew level on the stroke of half-time thanks to a well-executed attacking play finished by Sean Longstaff.

Here are five takeaways from the game…

When Wilson made his way back into the starting lineup, his body found a way to knock him out yet again. Saturday’s final home game at St James’ Park is the 32-year-old’s 24th absence this season.

Wilson was on media duty prior of the game, detailing his England hopes for next month’s Euro 2024 event. The striker’s slender chances of joining the Three Lions squad have been shattered by his latest setback.

However, there is some hope based on statements from head coach Eddie Howe, who says Wilson is not hurt and might return for the midweek trip to Manchester United.

“[He’s] just feeling unwell and a little bit of tightness in his body, no injury,” explained Howe. “Hopefully he can be back very quickly.”

Wilson’s absence resulted in the lone change to the starting lineup, with Elliot Anderson taking his place. Kieran Trippier returned to the bench after missing more than two months due to a calf injury.

After returning from injury, goalkeeper Nick Pope remained on the bench, with Martin Dubravka still preferred between the posts.
