Report: Newcastle hold talks with agent of 23-year-old La Liga star who would rival Nick Pope

Newcastle United have held talks with the agent of Villareal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen over a possible transfer this summer, according to reports.

The Magpies are in the market for a new goalkeeper after it was announced that third-choice shot-stopper Loris Karius’ contract would not be renewed.

It is also looking likely that Martin Dubravka could leave the club this summer.

Newcastle are also interested in Valencia keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who would reportedly cost Eddie Howe £30million.

Newcastle face competition from Chelsea for Jorgensen

Like most players, Chelsea are interested in them as they try to bolster their squad for their upcoming season.

However, it looks as if Newcastle have gotten to his agent first. Ben Jacobs has reported that talks have been held over a possible move to Tyneside this summer.

Despite the interest for Mamardashvili, Jorgensen would be the cheaper option with Transfermarkt valuing the Danish keeper at £13million.

Jorgensen kept six clean sheets in 36 La Liga appearances last season but conceded 63 goals.

Jorgensen matches up with Mamardashvili statistically

Despite fewer clean sheets last season, Jorgensen’s statistics are similar to Mamardashvili’s.

Jorgensen made 40 more saves than the Georgian international last season with 143. Their save percentage is similar as well. Jorgensen’s was 72.2% and Mamardashvili’s at 73.8%.

One thing that Jorgensen shines at, however, is his pass completion rate. His 80.7% blows Mamardashvili’s 53% out of the water.

Newcastle, a club that likes playing long balls from the back would be a perfect move for Jorgensen who would fit right into the Magpies play style.

Distribution is an issue for Newcastle’s first-choice keeper Nick Pope, bringing in Jorgensen would mean direct competition for a spot in the starting lineup
